About the Book
What if survival mode isn't evidence that you're failing at life, but evidence that the equation itself no longer works?
Survival Mode Is a Math Problem examines survival mode through the relationship between cumulative demand and finite human capacity. Its central argument is that many experiences commonly interpreted as failures of discipline, motivation, resilience, mindset, or self-management may instead be predictable responses to chronic cumulative overload.
Along the way, the book explores invisible load, cognitive fragmentation, emotional labor, decision fatigue, background vigilance, defensive physiology, adaptation, and the cost of sustained compensation, as well as recovery, nervous-system regulation, and biological limits. It considers how behavior changes under overload, and how modern productivity and optimization culture can obscure what is actually happening.
Written for a broad audience and complete on its own, the book also serves as an accessible, public-facing foundation for Human Capacity Systems Theory (HCST), an independent, systems-level conceptual framework created and developed by Jenni C. Miller. It is not medical advice and does not present itself as an established clinical or scientific theory.
